the practice FOR YOUNG ACTORS.
TEACH THEM TO BELIEVE IN WHO THEY ARE.
The main premise of my work with young people is to get them to explore who they really are and learn how to trust their instincts.
My goal is to help them trust their instincts, trust other people, step outside where they feel safe emotionally, find their voice, work as a group, and have fun digging into their creativity.
The classes are also designed to give them a strong background in the technical side of acting, both for stage and screen - because they are acting classes after all— but my classes aren’t groomed to “get work/get an agent”.
My main emphasis is to help them express themselves and to work in a team.
There is nothing more useful I could teach them at this stage than these two things.
WHAT WE DO.
My obsession with acting is to help people stop “performing” and to just “be” as themselves.
They don’t have to put anything on, be different, better, someone else- they just have to be themselves “in different circumstances”.
I am inspired by Stanislavski— a Russian teacher who was all about being “real”.
Stanislavski believed that you don't put on a 'character' it's YOU but in different circumstances.
To do this he created a load of questions to inspire you to “transform” slowly — and we spend most of our time in class exploring these ideas and how they can make them come to life.
The questions are
WHO AM I?
WHERE AM I?
WHEN AM I?
WHAT DO I WANT?
WHY DO I WANT IT?
HOW AM I GOING TO GET IT?
and WHAT’S THE OBSTACLE?
So we ask a lot of questions but we do a lot of ACTING as words don’t teach.
We also do woice work, accent work, bodywork, animal work, sense work, text work, memory work, and without exception— every student I have taught has shown an incredible aptitude for this art and grasp how to do it at a very deep level.
BUT most importantly we explore being silly, loud, wrong, uninteresting, ourselves.
